Students in Mrs. Hines’s fourth grade math classes participated in a project based learning activity in December. Students were given a budget of $300 to decorate the outside of their house with lights and other decorations. Students had to measure their houses to know how many feet of light strings they would need before calculating the cost into their budget. To do this, students made a blueprint listing where their decorations would be located. Finally, students decorated their houses using colored images, glitter, and crystals and then placed their arrangements into a city block. PBL math projects show students how adults use math in everyday activities and showcase why students need to learn math skills.
