teacher showing how butter is made

This week 2nd graders read When I Was Young in the Mountains by Cynthia Rylant. We talked about how the setting of a story includes not only the place, but also the time. We could tell that the story was set in the past because the characters did several things differently than we do today. For example, they had to pump water into pails and heat them to have water to take a bath! We also learned about the process of churning butter and all decided that would make our arms tired!  Then, CTEs very own Mrs. Davis came and shared with us how butter is made today on her family's farm, Southern Oaks Jerseys Farm & Creamery. She also talked about the process of milking cows, which is a necessary step to making butter! Finally, we were able to sample butter from Southern Oaks on bread from Swartzentruber's Bakery, which is also located in Abbeville.
